B92 – December 3, 2004

PRISTINA -- Friday - Nexhat Daci of the Democratic Council of Kosovo will maintain his position as speaker of the Kosovo parliament.

At a constitutive meeting of the parliament today, Daci received 99 of a possible 108 votes to retain his position.

Ramus Haradinaj became Kosovo Prime Minister today as well. Haradinaj was once a commander in the Kosovo Liberation Army and is now the leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo. He is also currently being investigated by The Hague Tribunal.

Serbian officials have announced that an indictment may be issued to Haradinaj by the end of the year, while most Albanians deny that there exists such a possibility.

"I think that the situation in Kosovo will take a definite turn for the worse if Haradinaj maintains the position of prime minister for long." said Democratic Party representative Dusan Petrovic.

As for the Serbian representatives in Kosovo, Oliver Ivanovic said that they will announce who their parliamentary representatives will be after a consultation with Belgrade.

Kosovo governor Soeren Jessen Petersen said that the next 12 months will be of vital importance to the future of Kosovo because the work of the parliament, the ruling coalitions and the parliamentary opposition will show whether Kosovo is progressing.
