BELGRADE -- Leposava Karamarkovic notified
the Serbian Parliament this afternoon that she was leaving the judiciary “with
bitterness and regret”.
She has been under increasing pressure to withdraw over the past few days
following allegations of incompetence and involvement in the release of wanted
criminals from custody.
“I am informing the National Parliament and the public that, because of crude
media and political pressure, I am no longer to carry out the duties of
president of the Supreme Court.
“Thus, with bitterness and regret, I am withdrawing from the judiciary, together
with all my knowledge and capability,” said Karamarkovic in an open letter.
