Tomanovic: Kay Knows Nothing About Defense
Strategy
Beta - September 2, 2004
Belgrade, 2 Sep (BETA) -- Zdenko Tomanovic, legal adviser to former Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic in a trial before the Hague Tribunal (International
Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia -- ICTY), tonight voiced doubt in the
efficacy of the court's decision to impose a defense lawyer on his client.
"We are yet to see whether it is possible that a lawyer who has been an amicus
curiae dons his defense lawyer's hat without having spoken to a single witness
or seen the documents prepared by the accused, without knowing the strategy of
the defense," Tomanovic told BETA.
Tomanovic advised waiting for the official appointment tomorrow of Steven Kay
and his aide Gillian Higgins as Milosevic's defense lawyers when the details of
the Hague Tribunal trial chamber decision will be known.
"We will only find out how all this will look like on Tuesday (7 September) when
the first witnesses for the defense will be questioned," Tomanovic said.
The Hague Tribunal trial chamber today appointed British lawyers Steven Kay and
Gillian Higgins as Milosevic's defenders.
