URGENT: Former Croatian Serb president Babic commits suicide

The Hague - The former Croatian Serb president Milan Babic has committed suicide in his cell in Scheveningen near The Hague where he was being held, the UN war crimes tribunal said Monday.

Babic, 50, was to have continued his testimony Monday in the trial of his successor Milan Martic.

Babic was serving a 13-year sentence imposed by the tribunal.
