BELGRADE , Dec 8 (Tanjug) - The presidential
election in Serbia, which is a repeat vote, started at 7 a.m. (0600 GMT) on
Sunday by opening more than 8,600 polling stations, where 6,625,760 voters will
be able to cast their ballots.
Voters will choose between three presidential candidates - Democratic Party of
Serbia's candidate Vojislav Kostunica, Serbian Radical Party's candidate
Vojislav Seselj and Borislav Pelevic, the Party of Serbian Unity's candidate.
Polling stations for the repeat presidential
elections in Serbia closed at 8 p.m. (1900 GMT).
According to the latest figures released by the Centre for Free Elections and
Democracy (CESID), the 7 p.m. turnout was 41.6 percent.
Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Serbia Vojislav Kostunica said
on Sunday it is well known how people of Serbia live at the moment and what
causes their dissatisfaction, adding that he hopes the citizens would express
their dissatisfaction in the ballot boxes and would not allow once again to be
cheated by someone.
After casting his ballot, Kostunica told reporters that "we all know why this
election is important, why Serbia's government is trying to prove that it is not
important, and why the international community is trying to prove that the
government is wrong," adding that "it is well known who is in favour of
stability in Serbia and who isn't".
Maybe I am not a very good presidential
candidate, but there isn't a better one in Serbia at the moment, said Serbian
Radical Party's candidate Vojislav Seselj on Sunday as he voted.
"It is important to us to win this presidential election, because we would then
prevent a definitive destruction of the political system and the legal order in
Serbia," said Seselj, adding that the fate of Serbia is "now in the hadns of its
citizens".
