Interview with Radovan Karadzic

EDITOR’S NOTE: Last week I was granted permission by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) to conduct a written interview with former Bosnian-Serb president Dr. Radovan Karadzic.

The interview was conducted under the following conditions: I provided a list of written questions to Dr. Karadzic’s attorney, and Dr. Karadzic responded to the questions in writing. Both my questions and Dr. Karadzic’s answers were subject to review and approval by the IRMCT.

Not only did Dr. Karadzic give answers to the questions, he also supplied documents and excerpts from documents that he references in his answers.

At Dr. Karadzic’s request, I have redacted the names of three of his advisers from the answers he gave. He provided their names to me, but asked me not to publish them because he didn’t want them to suffer negative consequences on account of their past association with him.

Dr. Karadzic followed-up the written interview with two telephone calls. I cannot discuss the contents of our telephone conversations because he could be punished by the authorities at the UN Detention Unit if I did, but I will share my general impression of the man.

Dr. Karadzic is a very intelligent man who obviously loves his country and his people. He has a warm personality and a kind disposition, and when he speaks he speaks with sincerity and conviction.

I plan to produce a series of articles based on my interview with Dr. Karadzic, but in the interest of transparency and fairness to Dr. Karadzic I have decided to publish the document I received from Dr. Karadzic in its entirety:
